Stuart Murray

Stuart Murray
Stuart Murray's writing follows his passions. Murray's fascination with Colonial America and the Revolutionary war infuse America's Song and Washington's Farewell with realism, embracing the strife and uncertainty that underlie seemingly fated historical paths. In Norman Rockwell at Home in Vermont, Murray writes about a childhood hero and the inspiration Rockwell discovered in Western Vermont, only a hop across the border from Murray's beloved New York State.

Murray is the author of twenty books, including works of historical fiction and nonfiction. He is also a magazine and book editor. His previous career as a journalist spanned twenty-five years; his articles appeared in The Albany Times Union, The Berkshire Eagle, and The New York Times.

Murray and his family live in New York's Hudson River Valley.

America's Song: The Story of 'Yankee Doodle'
Hardcover
Stuart Murray
During the first uncertain hours of the Revolution, British redcoats sang "Yankee Doodle' as an insult to Americans–but when the rebels won astounding victories this song of insult was transformed to a song of triumph, eventually becoming "America's Song."

This is the first complete chronicle of the story of "Yankee Doodle," perhaps the best-known tune in all the world. From its early days as an ancient air for dancing, through the era of Dutch and Puritan colonial settlement, "Yankee Doodle' evolved during the French and Indian Wars and the American Revolution to become our most stirring anthem of defiance and of liberty.

Washington's Farewell to His Officers: After Victory in the Revolution
Hardcover
Stuart Murray
In 1783 as British redcoats sailed away, General George Washington addressed his officers. In triumph, with gratitude, he bade them farewell and sent us all across the threshold of colonialism and war into the travail of building a Democracy. Almost forgotten in American history, this emotional incident is among the most telling and symbolic events of the War for Independence.

In the story of Washington's Farewell are the memories of long-struggling patriots–the famous and the little-known–men committed heart and soul to the cause of American liberty: Know, McDougall, Lamb, Hamilton, Steuben, Shaw, Humphreys, Varick, Burnett, Hull, Fish, Tallmadge, the Clintons, Van Cortlandt, Fraunces...Heroes all.
