D.B. Johnson,
Author, Illustrator, Artist & New Hampshire Resident

D. B. Johnson (Don) has been a professional artist for more than 25 years. He began his career as a newspaper artist in 1971, then worked as a technical illustrator, editorial cartoonist, comic strip artist, magazine art director, and corporate creative director. His freelance illustration appears regularly in the New York Times Book Review and Newsday. The Los Angeles Times Syndicate has distributed his op-ed illustrations each week to newspapers around the country and abroad since 1991.

His corporate illustration is represented in the U.S. by artist representatives Bruck & Moss in New York. His clients have included: Chase Bank, Merck, Silknet Software, Kemper, Schwab, Vermont Castings, and Salomon Smith Barney.

Most recently he has written and illustrated his first picture book for children, Henry Hikes To Fitchburg. This book grew out of a lifelong fascination with Thoreau's ideas about the necessities of life and the importance of living simply and close to nature.

D. B. Johnson lives in New Hampshire where he and his wife are avid hikers. They have three grown children.

A lighthearted competition commences when two friends agree to meet one evening in Fitchburg, thirty miles away. Henry decides to walk while his friend plans to work all day to earn the fare for the train. Playful pictures follow the progress of each, whether through a bustling small town or countryside alive with curiosities for an inquisitive bear.

Inspired by a passage from Henry David Thoreauís Walden, this wonderfully appealing story contrasts two friendsí very different approaches to life.
