The Garden Primer
Barbara Damrosch
Buy The Book
The Garden Primer is one of the most comprehensive gardening references available. This information-packed book of nearly 700 pages starts with chapters on "Planning Your Property" and "How to Buy Plants" and includes chapters on planting and growing annuals, perennials, vegetables, herbs, fruits, bulbs, roses, lawns and ground covers, vines, shrubs, trees, wildflowers, and even houseplants. Each of these is exceedingly well-organized. For example, the chapter "Vegetables" starts with a discussion of selecting the appropriate vegetables for the climate, site, and soil. Since the author is a landscape designer, she includes plans for several different vegetable gardens. The vegetable chapter concludes with information about specific vegetables from "asparagus" to "turnips."

The Garden Primer is an excellent first book for those planning their first garden, and a very handy reference for the experienced gardener.
