Buy the Book
The New Organic Grower is a comprehensive 340 page guide to the best tools and techniques for the home and market organic gardener. This newly revised and expanded edition of the classic book on organic gardening is exceptionally well organized.

The chapter "Land" discusses not only types of soil, but other topics relating to the land and soil including slope, drainage, wind protection, access, security, and pollutants. The two chapters on "Pests" discuss pest resistant crops, as well as physical controls such as floating row covers and natural pesticides such as finely ground rock podwers like "basalt dust."

Four-Season Harvest

Foreword by:
Barbara Damrosch
Buy the Book
The Four-Season Harvest is a how-to book for those interested in extending the season for growing organic produce. After an introduction to the concept of four-season organic gardening, the author discusses preparing the soil, selecting the crops, and planting. A significant portion of the book is devoted to preparing and using covered gardens with cold frames and tunnels and underground gardens with root cellars.

A very useful section of Four-Season Harvest is the chapter entitled "The Cast of Characters," which offers tips for growing 50 popular vegetables from globe artichokes to tomatoes, and including melons, asparagus, cucumbers, leeks, parsnips and peas.

An excellent book for anyone interested in extending their growing season by just a few weeks or trying to grow garden fresh vegetables all year round.

Keeping Food Fresh
Foreword by:
Eliot Coleman
Buy The Book
Typical books about preserving garden produce nearly always assume that modern "kitchen gardeners" will boil or freeze their vegetables and fruits. Yet here is a book that goes back to the future -- celebrating traditional but little-known French techniques for storing and preserving fresh edibles in ways that maximize flavor and nutrition. Translated into English for the first time, this book deliberately ignores freezing and high-temperature canning in favor of methods that are less costly and more energy-efficient.

As Eliot Coleman says in his foreword, "The Poetry of Food," "Food preservation techniques can be divided into two categories: the modern scientific methods that remove the life from food, and the natural 'poetic' methods that maintain or enhance the life in food. The poetic techniques produce...foods that have been celebrated for centuries and are considered gourmet delights today."

Keeping Food Fresh offers more than 250 easy and enjoyable recipes featuring locally grown and minimally refined ingredients.
