Marty Basch,

Marty Basch is a writer, lecturer and adventurer who has written widely on outdoor recreational themes. He has authored five books, one of which won an Honorable Mention at the 1999 National Outdoor Book Awards. His articles have appeared in numerous publications like The Boston Globe, Adventure Cyclist and AMC Outdoors while his syndicated outdoor adventure column can be found in several New England newspapers.

A Boston University graduate, Basch worked as a radio newsman in New Hampshire, Boston and the Middle East, and was employed as a newspaper reporter at two New Hampshire dailies before turning his attention to the outdoors. He has won awards from the Associated Press for his radio reporting and the Harold Hirsch Award from the North American Snowsports Journalists Association for his ski writing. In 1999, he took second place in a writing contest sponsored by the New England Outdoor Writers Association. Basch is also a long-distance bicyclist. He has gone on several radical rides, including a 5,198 mile solo journey in 1994 from Maine to Alaska. His exploits, including being saved from a face-to-face grizzly bear encounter, was chronicled in his first book Against the Wind. A 3,000 mile solo cycling trip near and above the Arctic Circle in 1996 was chronicled in his book Above the Circle. He has also written a guidebook for mountain biking and road riding in New Hampshire's White Mountains called The White Mountain Ride Guide.

Basch, along with companion Jan Duprey, mountain biked the 2,500 mile Great Divide Mountain Bike Route from Canada to Mexico in 1998. They carried a laptop computer and filed stories to various outlets including ABCNEWS.com. He also has penned two guidebooks to snowshoeing and cross-country skiing: Winter Trails Maine and Winter Trails Vermont and New Hampshire, (winner of the Honorable Mention at the 1999 National Outdoor Book Awards) both published by Globe Pequot Press. He lives in New Hampshire's White Mountains.

Over the course of his 5,000 mile journey through Canada, Basch encountered travelers with amazing tales. Meet Jinkzie Green, a cremated woman being carried to Alaska in a bicyclist's pannier.
